Truro, England – England’s Most Southerly City

Alyssa Mendell asked:

The most southerly city in Great Britain, Truro has a 2001 population of 21,000 and is the only city in the county of Cornwall. Truro has a long and varied history, starting as a port town, developing into a Stannary town (a place where tin is mined), and by the 18th-century growing into a prosperous, wealthy city, earning the nickname “London in Cornwall”.

Much of the fine Georgian architecture from this period still remains. The most striking architectural feature of Truro however is the Gothic Revival-Cathedral, a 30 year project starting in 1880 as the first Cathedral to be built in England since the Middle Ages.

Other traditions from Truro’s past remain as well, such as the fact that Truro was traditionally a place for the people of Cornwall to come for shopping. The town now has a wide selection of specialty shops, markets and chain stores. The Pannier Market is an indoor year-round shopping place with many small businesses and merchants. Within a few blocks is the Lemon street market and the Truro Farmers Markets.

To complement the shopping, Truro is truly a social center, featuring numerous bistros and restaurants, cafes, bars and a buzzing nightlife. The Hall for Cornwall is a performing arts and entertainment Auditorium that features Opera, music acts, ballet and musicals.

There are also fine parks and open spaces in Truro. Victoria Gardens features summer bandstand concerts, and Boscawen Park is a great park beside the Truro River. Lemon Quay Piazza hosts numerous events and is a popular attraction for visitors. It features a Farmers’ Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays and the city carnival in September. There are many attractions in Truro during the summer, so this is the time to visit.

Also don’t miss Cornwall’s oldest museum, the Royal Cornwall Museum, which was founded in 1818 and showcases Cornish history and culture, along with art, geology and archaeology.

When in London

Elle Wood asked:

London! What a fabulous city! When you plan a trip to the United Kingdom, make sure you allot enough time in its capital, because there is so much to see and do.

The city is the cultural and economic, as well as the political, hub of Great Britain. Its port is one of the busiest in the world, as is its major airport, Heathrow. British Airways is the main carrier, and it offers nonstop flights from a number of US cities. There is an underground rail service, as well as bus lines, from the airport to the city center, along with the Heathrow airport parking options. And of course, using public transportation isn’t as difficult as in other parts of Europe, since all the signs are in English.

In addition to being the seat of Parliament and government, London is the base for the royal family, and thus home, of course, to Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, and the changing of the Guards. In addition to these sites, London boasts numerous museums, theater- and concert-going experiences, and fabulous shopping. The city is divided by the winding River Thames, with most of the tourist sights found along the northern bank.

Those who enjoy music might want to visit sometime from July to September, when the “Proms,” or promenade concerts, take place in the Royal Albert Hall. World-class musicals can be enjoyed in London’s famous West End theaters. Less famous, but also enjoyable, is the live music found in numerous music bars and concert halls.

The West End is also the place for shoppers to start. They can begin with the upscale elegance offered along New Bond Street, where retailers from Cartier to Chanel to Versace to Tiffany can be found. Nearby Savile Row is celebrated for its bespoke men’s suits. If the money begins to run out, shoppers can head to Oxford Street, where a broader range of shopping experiences await.

Museum goers can appreciate the renowned works in the British Museum and the National Gallery. Along “Museum Mile” in South Kensington, one can enjoy the extensive collections of the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Victoria & Albert Museum.

If, somehow, this isn’t enough to fulfill one’s wanderlust, travel from London to other areas is easy, with a number of options. Rail connections can be made to the European mainland from Victoria or Liverpool Street Stations. Fast trips can be made by taking a bus or taxi from the city center, or choose to park your vehicle at the Heathrow airport parking garages and head right to the terminals for quick hops to points around the continent.

6 Places to Visit in London That Will Thrill and Delight You

Arthur Townlands asked:

Whether you are visiting our fantastic city for the first time, or whether you are on a return trip, here are six places to visit in London that simply cannot be missed.

1. Regents Canal is a beautifully picturesque canal that links the Great Union Canal to the center of the city of London as few people have ever seen it before, most certainly cementing its position as one of the superb places to visit in London. Over its short distance of 8 kilometers, you will see views of London from a totally new and stunning perspective, including the gorgeous area known as “Little Venice”. You can either walk the towpath or take one of 4 leisurely sailings each day to explore the delights of this hidden treasure.

2. The London Eye is a “must see” attraction when visiting London. As one of our strongly recommended places to visit in London, it offers a breath taking aerial view right across the city taking in such unmistakable sites as the Thames embankment with the Houses of Parliament, the renowned dome of St Paul’s Cathedral, and so much more. If you can, book a trip on “The Eye” at nightime. All of the great landmarks of London are brilliantly illuminated, and you will see the unforgettable panorama of the city spread out before you fully lit in a never to be forgotten experience of a lifetime

3. Borough Market will provide a different tourist experience amongst the places to visit in London. It is London’s oldest food market having been in existence in its current location for over 250 years. A bustling and lively environment, it displays some wonderful culinary delights from all over the world and is THE place to buy some wonderful French cheeses (all totally fresh and shipped in every day), European sausages, and a succulent range of prepared dishes to enjoy there and then. It is in a wonderful location allowing easy access to Southwark Cathedral (the oldest Gothic building in the city), the London Dungeons, The Tower of London and Tower Bridge.

4. Soho: No trip to London would be complete without visiting Soho, one of the top places to visit in London. Soho was once known for its seedier side of life, but it is now hailed as one of the most exciting and vibrant areas in the city. Take a trip through its narrow streets and walkways and sample the atmosphere, the entertainment, and the restaurant scene. You will be captivated among hundreds of other tourists as you explore the real London.

5. Madame Tussauds: one of the premier places to visit in London is Madame Tussauds, which houses an exhibition of the most wonderfully realistic waxwork figures. Famous celebrities of stage, screen, sport and life are displayed in stunning lifelike reality and the famous “Chamber of Horrors” is an experience not to be missed. Originally conceived by Madame Tussaud in 1836, the current exhibition can be found in the Marylebone Road where it has been housed since 1884.

6. The West End: last but by no means least in our list of places to visit in London is the area known as the West End. With world class shops and stores to satisfy the demands of most discerning of shoppers, it is the evening entertainment that adds that that killer touch to a brilliant day out. The West End is THEATRE LAND and you will find some of the greatest stage shows on earth awaiting your pleasure. You can combine a meal at one of the top restaurants, where you can not only dine in style, but you will be ushered out on in perfect time for curtain rise at your theatre just a minutes walk from the restaurant. It will be an evening to treasure.
